- So perhaps Man was a spiritual being rather than a materialistic being. Somewhere along the line we lost this spirituality, and degraded into a materialistic consumerism. As a consequence of this, Man is plagued by greed, wars, poverty, slavery and all other ills of what we call "civilization". But this is all that we know. No matter how hard we try to cure these ills, we always fail because we rely on material solutions to solve the ills created by materialism.
