Those who are in the top 500 MLG rank are people who consistently play on a competitive level.

You are right there are a shit ton of bad kids who disband and remake. If you disband and remake, it doesn't affect your overall MLG rank, but the games still count towards your own individual rank. It does reset your team rank (back to 1000xp). So the people in the top 500 MLG are people who are very good. Not necessarily the same for top 500 ladder teams.
