Canon SD780, or Sony DSC-W290? Helps me chooze!! I already have n Canon SD30 Digital Elph and a Sony DSC-W300, but the new offerings from Canon and Sony up the ante with 720p HD video @ 30fps! zomg zomg zomg! I have misc hardware for both platforms (memory, chargers, etc). So I'm thinking this one might boil down to tech specs.

Canon is a little smaller, and comes in a badass red color. Sony looks a little more business-like though. Sony = ?, Canon = H.264 codec. I'm leaning toward Canon.

Because they refuse to dedicate their time to being a serious contender in the DSLR market.

Compared to what? Any advanced point and shoot is going to be highly dependent on the shooter much like a DSLR. Here's a group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/843626@N22/pool/

+1 to thephilosopher... i tell people all the time that equipment can only make what would have been a good picture better. the main factor on whether a picture is good or not is the shooter. i've seen some amazing stuff shot with polaroids, disposable cameras, point and shoots, camera phones... you name it.

that point aside, you should really just go out to the store and play around with these cameras and see what you like best and if it fits your budget.

just make sure you like everything about it before you take the plunge. play around with it, go through the menus to see how intuitive the interface is, test the macro focus setting that you mentioned. rinse and repeat til you find the one you absolutely love.

If you had to choose between the Nikon D90 and Canon 50D which one would you pick and why. I am having a hard time deciding which one to go for.

I'm considering getting the new Nikon d3100. What would you guys suggest for a beginner dSLR guy, a 35mm f/1.8 Nikon lens, or just the VR 55-200mm? This is along with the kit lens.
